According to YNaija, "YouTube and Netflix are increasingly competing for something neither platform traditionally owned: the creators who built their audiences elsewhere." Nigeria sits on creators with substantial following but limited monetisation options. Competition between platforms creates leverage.

The creator economy's power dynamic shifted. Once, creators needed platforms. Now, if a creator is big enough, platforms need them more.

"Platforms are no longer just competing for viewers; they are competing for the people who can bring those viewers with them," YNaija reported. This shift matters for Nigeria. The country has built substantial creator talent across YouTube, TikTok and Instagram. These are people with audiences in the hundreds of thousands who have done the hard work of building loyalty without platform backing.

Netflix's move into creator partnerships shows the pattern. The streamer has "increasingly licensed creator-led content, including programmes from Ms. Rachel, Mark Rober and other major internet personalities," according to the analysis. For Netflix, the attraction is obvious: audiences that already exist and trust the creator, bypassing expensive audience acquisition.

Nigeria hasn't yet reached the point where YouTube and Netflix openly bid against each other for local talent. But the conditions are gathering. As YNaija notes: "Nigeria is not yet at the point where Netflix and YouTube are openly fighting over its biggest creators, but the ingredients for that conversation already exist." Nigerian creators own formats, production capability and demonstrated reach. That's the recipe for leverage.

The smarter strategy for Nigerian creators (especially those with real reach) is to operate as production companies, not talent. "A YouTuber with millions of followers is not only producing videos; they are sitting on intellectual property, audience loyalty and a distribution network built over years," the analysis explains. That's negotiating from strength.

When platforms begin competing, the creators with most leverage will be the ones building something permanent, not just accumulating followers.
